HOLDEN’S FIVE STAR LINE-UP GAINS ANOTHER MEMBER

Holden’s Series II Captiva 7 SX diesel has secured a maximum five-star safety rating from the
Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

Launched in February 2011, the Holden Series II Captiva range was enhanced with the
introduction of six airbags – driver, front passenger, front side and curtain airbags - as standard on
all models, an electric park brake and Hill Start Assist technology to prevent “roll-away” on inclines.

These features were added to Captiva’s already impressive array of active and passive safety
technology including Electronic Stability Control system incorporating anti-lock braking, electronic
brakeforce distribution, brake assist, traction control and active rollover protection.

All Captiva models are also fitted with a descent control system which maintains a slow speed for
navigating steep downhill gradients.

Holden’s Vehicle Structure & Safety Integration Manager, Steve Curtis said it was great to receive
a local endorsement for this globally successful car.

"We’ve been very confident in the Captiva’s safety credentials, particularly after the Chevrolet
Captiva range was awarded a top five star rating from EuroNCAP in October,” Mr Curtis said.
“But it’s great to know that yet another Holden has earned the highest Australian safety rating."
Captiva 7 SX diesel joins the Commodore, Cruze and Barina range which have all been awarded
the maximum five star safety rating from ANCAP.

The 2011 all-new Holden Barina hatch goes on sale in Australia in November. Barina has been a well known name in Australia since the introduction of the first model Barina, back in 1985.

The launch of the all-new Holden Cruze hatch today marks another milestone in Holden’s history as this Australian-designed model goes global for General Motors.

As Australia’s own small car, the Cruze hatch has been designed at Holden’s Port
Melbourne design studio, is built in South Australia and has undergone extensive local engineering for Australian driving conditions and tastes.

Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said that Holden’s world-class
expertise in design, engineering and manufacturing has delivered a Cruze hatch that is not only ideally suited to Australian customers and conditions, but one that also appeals to a truly global audience.

Cruze hatch has already launched to critical acclaim in the UK and Korea (where it wears a Chevrolet badge), and is destined to be sold in more than 60 countries.
“Cruze sedan is already a huge success in Australia, establishing itself as one of the top five selling cars in the market in just two years. With the addition of the new Cruze hatch we can now offer small car buyers a stylish and sporty home-grown alternative,” Mr Devereux said.

“The launch of this car today showcases Holden’s ability to design, engineer and build a car that is world-class and a genuine global player for General Motors.”

Extensive Australian testing and evaluation covered more than 140,000km and saw a
number of key Australian engineering modifications made. Many of these engineering
changes have now been adopted globally on both Cruze hatch and sedan.

Cruze hatch is available with a choice of three engines, three transmissions and four trim levels with recommended retail pricing (excluding government, dealer and statutory charges)starting at $21,240 for the Cruze CD 1.8-litre manual, meaning customers have a range of Cruze options to suit their particular wants and needs.

As part of Holden’s ongoing aim to provide great value for money and choice, the Cruze hatch is priced to match the Cruze sedan and shares the same high level of standard features and equipment.

Sporty Design and High Level of Standard Features
The design process was led by Holden’s Port Melbourne Design Studio. The brief was
simple, but challenging: create a car that delivers a sporty and youthful look with a practical rear load space that was recognisable as an integrated member of the Cruze family.

It’s striking coupe-like profile accentuated by the low roof, short front and rear overhangs, rising belt line, and sculpted rear hatch topped with an integrated spoiler provide the Cruze hatch with a particularly athletic aesthetic.

The design of the front and rear fascia treatments emphasise the car’s wide, solid stance and contribute to its sharp and muscular presence.

Inside, the new Cruze hatch shares the sedan’s dual cockpit design with quality finishes, soft-touch components and an integrated centre stack that flows seamlessly into the centre console.

Holden’s designers have worked hard to produce a five-door hatch that is both stylish and practical with clever design delivering a rear load space that offers a 413 litre capacity from its well-finished luggage space. This expands to a large 1254 litre capacity when the standard 60/40 split rear seat backs are folded flat.

With the no-cost option full-size steel spare fitted, cargo volume is still a very competitive 325 litres, with multiple storage compartments built under the boot floor to provide nine litres of handy cargo space.

As with all Holdens, the new Cruze hatch is very well equipped for comfort and convenience with standard features across the range including:
. Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free mobile phone use from compatible devices
. Voice recognition for certain Bluetooth functions including dial, redial, save and add voice tags
. Air conditioning
. Cruise control
. Trip computer
. Front and rear power windows
. Six-way adjustable driver and front passenger seats
. Automatic lights with programmable “follow-me home” headlight functionality and
remote keyless entry
. Steering wheel-mounted remote audio and cruise controls
. Advanced six-speaker multimedia audio system with AM/FM radio, in-dash MP3
compatible CD player, and USB input with iPod compatibility to enable complete
control of the device through the audio system controls.
. Cruze hatch CD models feature stylish 16-inch wheel covers
. Ice blue dash illumination

The mid-range CDX model gains:
. 17-inch alloy wheels (four)
. Front fog lamps
. Leather appointed seats, steering wheel and gearshift
. Rear park assist
. Three-setting heated front seats

Cruze hatch SRi adds an injection of sports DNA with additional features over the CD model:
. Sports body kit comprising unique front and rear fascias and side skirts
. Rear lip spoiler
. Front fog lamps
. Leather wrap steering wheel and gear shifter
. Chrome grille header and chrome insert door handles
. Five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels (four)
. Seats with Sportec bolsters are available in a choice of Jet Black or Sonic Blue fabric depending on the exterior colour continue the sports theme.

The top of the range SRi-V model combines all the sports features of the SRi and adds a sense of luxury with the addition of:
. Leather appointed seats that include a three-setting heating function for the driver and front passenger
. Passive entry and start with sensor key technology (keyless entry and push button
start and stop)
. Rear park assist
. Large 7-inch full colour screen now adds touch-screen functionality to control the
integrated satellite navigation and premium six-speaker DVD/CD audio system. This
audio system not only offers MP3 and iPod compatibility via a USB connection but
with a 10GB hard drive also enables storage of CDs and MP3s and the ability to
pause live radio. Voice recognition that allows voice control over certain radio, audio system and navigation functions including selecting radio stations, audio tracks, navigation settings and preset destinations.

Powerful and Economical Powertrains and Agile Dynamics
The new Holden Cruze hatch offers a choice of three powerful yet economical engines that offer the same level of refined performance and fuel efficiency as the Series II Cruze sedan range.

The Holden Cruze engineering team have ensured the CD and CDX hatch models maintain
the same economical fuel consumption as the equivalent Series II Cruze sedan models.
This has been achieved in part thanks to the sleek aerodynamic shape of the hatch and through a number of minor adjustments and modifications to mechanical components.

At the top of the range, the SRi and SRi-V Cruze hatch feature Holden’s latest generation, direct-injection turbocharged Ecoline 1.4 litre iTi (intelligent Turbo induction) engine that generates 103kW of power and a healthy 200Nm of torque over a wide rev range.

Despite offering the performance of a larger displacement engine, the 1.4 litre iTi returns 6.4litres per 100 kilometres when paired with the six-speed manual transmission (CD model) and 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres when mated to the optional six-speed Active Select automatic transmission (CD model).

The mid-range CDX model offers a choice of a 1.8 litre ECOTEC petrol or Ecoline 2.0 litre turbo diesel engines, with the petrol engine developing 104kW of power and 176Nm of torque. Mated to the standard five-speed manual transmission, this engine delivers a fuel economy of 7.0 litres per 100 kilometres or just 7.4 litres per 100 kilometres when combined with the optional six-speed Active Select automatic transmission.

As the most fuel-efficient car built in Australia, the 2.0-litre diesel manual Cruze hatch offers a superb combination of economy and performance with maximum outputs of 120kW and 360Nm and a fuel consumption figure of just 5.6-litre per 100km with the standard six-speed manual gearbox and 6.7-litres when mated to the optional six-speed Active Select automatic transmission.

Buyers of the entry-level CD model are offered even greater choice with all three engines available with their respective standard and optional transmissions.
Like the Cruze sedan, its agile dynamic characteristics are ensured with a MacPherson strut front and Compound Crank Axle rear suspension for 1.8 litre petrol and 2.0 litre diesel models while the sportier 1.4 litre turbo uses a performance-tuned Watts Link rear suspension and electric power steering to provide enhanced sporting attitude and agility.

Safety First
While the new Cruze hatch is a stylish, sporty, practical and refined small car, Holden has ensured it also offers the highest degree of safety, with a five-star ANCAP occupant protection rating across the range.

With a particularly stiff and strong body shell, the safety performance of the car is enhanced by a long list of standard features across the range, including six airbags (driver and front passenger front and side and full-length side curtain), Electronic Stability Control incorporating anti-lock braking system, brake assist, electronic brakeforce distribution and traction control.

All five seating positions feature adjustable head restraints and three-point seatbelts with the front seatbelts offering sash height adjustment and pretensioners with load limiters. To help reduce driver leg injuries in a crash, Cruze also features a collapsible pedal release system.

THE HOLDEN VOLT HAS LANDED!

The first Holden Volt has landed in Australia and has been revealed to employees at a special event held at Holden headquarters today.
This first cutting-edge Holden Volt vehicle arrived into Australia from the United States and is a left-hand drive model that has been adapted for use by the engineering team to begin in-country validation and verification.
The Volt has been used for numerous engineering evaluation trips, seeing it drive to various places around the country including Sydney and Canberra.
Paul Gibson, Director of Electrical Engineering at Holden, said: “The engineering department will use these validation exercises to ensure the electrical infrastructure around the country supports the Volt and that the recharging process is as seamless as possible for customers,”
The Holden Volt represents a major milestone for the Red Lion brand.
Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said the Holden Volt will be a game changer for Holden and the wider automotive industry in this country.

“It is among the most technologically advanced cars on the road anywhere in the world and spearheads Holden‟s push to become a leader in the field of technology and sustainable motoring.

“The Volt will make driving more economical, more environmentally-friendly and will fundamentally change the way Australia thinks about alternative transport solutions. This is the start of something big for Holden and Australia.”

Many of the Volt‟s benefits are due to its groundbreaking propulsion system; the Volt was the world‟s first electric vehicle with extended range capability. Driven purely by the advanced lithium ion battery, the Volt can drive on electric-only power using electricity stored in its 16 kW/h lithium ion battery.

When the battery runs low, a petrol-powered engine seamlessly operates to recharge the battery, thereby eliminating „range anxiety‟ and making the Volt the most practical electric car on the market.

Owners of the Volt in the United States have recorded up to 2300km (equivalent) of driving before needing to refuel the petrol engine, which acts as a generator to recharge the battery (www.gm-volt.com).

Holden‟s new dedicated Volt website has also launched today, head there for more details on this ground-breaking vehicle.

The Holden Volt will go on sale in Australia towards the end of 2012.

The commercial was filmed on location at Avalon Airport, Victoria

3 hours footage was filmed in total -- 2 of the car and 1 of the bull

A team of 40 people took part in the shoot, including actors, film crew, locations team, wardrobe, Holden reps and more.....and we filmed not 1, but 2 angry bulls!

Then the team spent 6 days in post production, to get the finished ad.

Beecham Holden Caboolture is celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Holden Ute with the return of the special edition Thunder nameplate to the VE Series II line-up.

The special edition Thunder Ute arrives at Beecham’s showroom this month, 60 years after Holden’s original 1951 Ute hit the market, and will deliver a tough-looking package with an impressive $3000 of extra value.

Dealer Principal, Chris Beecham, said the Ute had come a long way in 60 years.

“Over 60 years of production, the Holden Ute has changed from a pure workhorse to a practical two-door sports machine,” Mr Beecham said.

"Beecham Holden sold its first Ute 24 years ago, and with its bold, tough looks and sporty credentials it is as popular today as it’s ever been.

Holden executive director of sales, marketing and aftersales, John Elsworth, today confirmed the Holden Malibu would go on sale in Australia “late next year”, filling the gap between the locally manufactured Cruze and Commodore.

General Motors says the Malibu will be powered by a range of “fuel efficient and powerful” four-cylinder engines.

Among those will be a brand new 2.5-litre direct injection petrol unit with 141kW of power and 245Nm of torque. The engine will be mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that has been tuned to enhance powertrain efficiency.

GM engineers say they benchmarked the Malibu’s ride and handling against more expensive sports cars in their attempt to make it smooth, precise and dynamic on country roads and freeways all around the world.

It will feature MacPherson strut front and multi-link rear suspension, as well as ventilated front disc brakes with dual piston aluminium calipers, which GM says should make it the segment leader in stopping distance.

Chassis control safety technology includes ABS, traction control, ESC, EBD, brake assist, corner brake control, hydraulic brake fade assist and drag torque control.

Other standard safety features in North America will include dual front, side, knee and roof rail airbags with rollover protection. Optional features include second-row side airbags (taking the maximum number to 10), lane departure warning with forward collision alert and a rear-view camera.

US customers will have four interior colours to choose from, while the insert materials on the centre console, doors and steering wheel can also be personalised in either chrome, metal or wood. Soft-touch surfaces and ice blue ambient lighting promise to create a high quality cabin feel.

The seven-inch colour touchscreen will incorporate Bluetooth wireless audio streaming as well as a range of other functions controlled by the MyLink infotainment system. Behind the screen is a 15cm bin to store phones and other wireless devices.

The new Malibu has a wider stance than the outgoing model, sporting broader shoulders and a shorter wheelbase for a significantly more aggressive appearance. LED taillights and alloy wheels ranging from 17 to 19 inches add to the Camaro-inspired exterior package.

Production of the 2013 Chevrolet Malibu will begin early next year. More details of the 2012 Holden Malibu will be revealed closer to the vehicle’s launch.

Holden creates another 100 jobs on the back of US and local demand

CAR manufacturer Holden will hire 100 staff to meet production demands for US police cars and its new Cruze model.
The positions come on top of the 165 added to its 2400-strong Elizabeth workforce late last year as the company began the final pilot builds of its small Cruze car.
US police forces are testing a handful of Holden's Chrevolet-baged Caprice models as the company aims to secure a major slice of the estimated 70,000 vehicles sold to law enforcement agencies each year.
The first cars are to enter service this year, but Holden is facing stiff opposition from major rivals Dodge and Ford.
Holden manufacturing executive director Martyn Cray said the company would not have made the investment in the US market without being confident.
"The police car is being tested by drivers in the US, they are the ones buying it and when we get an idea on how happy they are we'll be able to make more announcements - the police market is new for us so we're feeling our through the market." he said.
"We've invested a lot of engineering resources and a lot of money in the (US) police program - we wouldn't have invested all that if we didn't think we had a fighting chance of getting that business."
Acting SA Industry and Trade Minister John Rau said the extra jobs was a positive development.
"We're very pleased to have been able to partner with Holden and get this great outcome for the people of SA and in particular the people living in the northern suburbs, it's a great opportunity for them," he said.

To those that don't recognize Steve Saint, he's the son of Nate Saint, one of five missionaries killed by the natives in Ecuador in the fifties. Nate's wife and the mother of a young Steve later went into the jungles to witness to those same native tribes who had killed her husband. They accepted her and Steve as they lived among them for years and witnessed the eventual conversions of the tribal members to Christianity, including the actual ones that killed her husband. Steve spent years developing this auto-airplane to be used in the jungles and any other place where there are no airports nor roads to villages and camps. As he mentions, it can be fitted with pontoons or ski runners to operate in snow or on water.

Flex Ethanol Australia brings waste-to-ethanol plant a step closer

A ground-breaking plant capable of turning household rubbish into ethanol is one step closer with a new company, Flex Ethanol Australia, to be formed.

Making the announcement to Melbourne business leaders at the American Chamber of Commerce today, Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mike Devereux said the new company would be an important step towards building Australia’s first commercially viable second-generation ethanol plant.

“I’m pleased to announce today we’ve reached the next and most important milestone in this project. A new company called Flex Ethanol Australia will be formed, supported by GM, to take the project to the next stage of commercialisation,” Mr Devereux said.

He said the plant, earmarked for Victoria, would be capable of turning up to a million tonnes of household rubbish and building waste into more than 200 million litres of ethanol a year.

The ethanol produced by the plant would be used in a range of ethanol-blend fuels, including the alternative fuel known commonly as E85, which contains a mixture of up to 85 per cent ethanol and 15 per cent regular petrol. The fuel is sold at Caltex service stations as Bio E-Flex and can be used to power vehicles flex-fuel vehicles in Holden’s recently launched VE Series II Commodore range.

Mr Devereux said the launch of the first Australian-made cars capable of running on high-blend ethanol fuel, as well as Holden’s involvement in the second-generation ethanol plant demonstrated the company’s commitment to sustainable motoring through the development of renewable fuels that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve energy security.

He said both Holden and Caltex were committed to giving drivers the choice to use a fuel that is up to 85 per cent renewable, with the potential to reduce their vehicles’ ‘well to wheel’ CO₂ emissions by up to 40 per cent.

“Our vision is that this technology, and the shift towards ethanol-based fuel, in time, could cut Australia’s dependence on petrol by up to 30 per cent and make a major contribution to sustainable motoring and greenhouse gas reduction,” he said.

Mr Devereux said one of the first projects undertaken by Flex Ethanol Australia would be a comprehensive trial at Coskata’s facility in the US, to test the suitability of Australian-specific household waste, for ethanol production.

Carsales.com Ltd, Australia’s number one automotive classifieds company, announced the award today after online car buyers voted for their favourite vehicles using one of its many websites, including carsales.com.au, CarPoint.com.au and Redbook.com.au.

Carsales.com Ltd Chief Executive Officer Greg Roebuck said the awards were the only popular poll where car buyers determined the winners themselves.

“Commodore has taken out the Large Car category every year since our awards were instituted. Holden is a household name in Australia and a key part of the automotive landscape,” Mr Roebuck said.

Volt named Car of the Year

Ahead of its Australian launch as the Holden Volt in 2012, the Chevrolet Volt has been named 2011 Car of the Year by esteemed US motoring publications Motor Trend and AUTOMOBILE.

Holden’s Energy and Environment Director Richard Marshall said the accolades reinforced that Volt would have a significant impact when launched in Australia.

“We committed in 2008 to bring Volt to Australia, recognising then, that this vehicle represented game-changing technology for the auto industry,” Mr Marshall said.

“When it arrives locally, Volt will make driving more economical, better for the environment and will change the way we think about alternative transport solutions.”

The editors of AUTOMOBILE praised Volt, saying it was: “the most sophisticated, most important vehicle on the road today”, while Motor Trend said: “[Volt] is a fully functional, no-compromise compact automobile that offers consumers real benefits in terms of lower running costs.”

Many of these benefits are due to the Volt’s groundbreaking propulsion system. As the world’s first electric vehicle with extended range capability, the Chevrolet Volt has a total driving range of about 550 kilometres depending on driving style and conditions.

For the first 40 to 80 kilometres, the Volt drives on electric-only power using electricity stored in its 16-kWh lithium-ion battery. When the battery runs low, a petrol powered engine/generator seamlessly operates to extend the driving range more than 480 kilometres on a full tank.

GM estimates that compared to similar sized petrol-powered vehicles, Volt will save motorists up to 1892 litres of fuel a year. This is based on US research that identifies 75 per cent of commuters travel an average daily distance of fewer than 64 kilometres.

GM also calculates that charging the vehicle at night through a standard power outlet will use less electricity annually than an average household refrigerator.

Mr Marshall said Volt would be an integral part of Holden’s Ecoline range of vehicles - which offered consumers a range of affordable, efficient and alternative fuel solutions to tackle rising fuel costs and Australia’s dependence on foreign oil.

“Holden is committed to developing sustainable and cost-saving transport solutions,” he said.

“These two internationally significant awards further highlight the benefits of Volt and we’re excited to be working on the up-coming Australian launch of this important vehicle.”

Ferrari recalls exploding 458 Italia sports car

Italian carmaker Ferrari announced overnight it had recalled all versions of its model 458 Italia sports car produced before July 2010 after four of them caught fire.

"Our dealers are going to call clients and tell them to bring back their cars so that the necessary modifications can be carried out," a spokesman told AFP.

The recall involves 1248 vehicles worldwide, the official said.

Ferrari last week opened an enquiry after four of its vehicles caught fire spontaneously in California, China, France and Switzerland.

The investigation had shown problems with the mounting, adhesive, heat shields and wheel arch assembly, the spokesman said.

"High outside temperatures and intensive use of the vehicle cause a distortion and the vehicle catches fire," he said, adding that the modification will include replacing the heat shields.

BRITAIN'S High Court has refused to grant a temporary injunction preventing the revelation of the identity of Top Gear's The Stig as Ben Collins.

The BBC had taken legal action to block HarperCollins' publication of the 35-year-old's autobiography which would unmask the mystery racing driver.

It claimed he is bound by a confidentiality agreement and that revealing who he is would spoil viewers' enjoyment of the popular BBC-produced program.

The driver's identity has long been a closely guarded show secret, spawning T-shirts emblazoned with slogans such as 'My Dad is The Stig'.

Only executives and Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May were said to know the identity of The Stig, famous for racing cars on the show wearing white overalls and a blacked-out visor.

However, many viewers may already have had a good idea about who he was after a company owned by Mr Collins, a stuntman from Bristol, published accounts listing ``driving services provided for the BBC, mainly in the Top Gear program''.

After more than a day of legal submissions in private before Mr Justice Morgan in London, lawyers for HarperCollins emerged today to say the case had concluded in their favor.

Solicitor Robin Shaw said: "The judge has said he is not going to grant an injunction in this case."

Mr Collins was in court for part of today's hearing.

A spokesman for the BBC said today's judgment did not prevent it from pursuing the matter to a full trial of the issues.

Several racing drivers have been linked to the role, including former Formula One world champions Damon Hill and Michael Schumacher and - most recently - Mr Collins, who was a stunt double for James Bond.

The current Stig is the second in the role. The first Stig, Perry McCarthy, was dropped in 2003 after his identity was uncovered.

HarperCollins communications director Siobhan Kenny said later: "This is a victory for freedom of speech."

"Ben Collins has a great story to tell about his seven years as The Stig which will appeal to a wide audience beyond the world of motoring enthusiasts. The book will be published on September 16."

The BBC is taking legal action against 'The Stig,' the mystery stunt driver on Top Gear, in an attempt to stop him from disclosing his identity.

The corporation is trying to prevent him from writing an autobiography, a move his lawyers say is in violation of his basic human rights, reports The Telegraph.

The Stig is always seen in his trademark white overalls with his face concealed behind a black visor when he test drives a number of cars as well as training celebrities for Top Gear’s ‘Star in a Reasonably Priced Car' segment.

There is a strict clause in his contract that prevents him from revealing his identity to anyone.

It is rumoured that only six people, including the programme's presenters — Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond — know his true identity.

Celebrities who appear on the program are not allowed to see his face.

The Stig is reportedly unhappy that other presenters are able to earn large sums of money from book deals and promotions from which he is barred.

Unlikely, but it shows the youthful fun factor on tap for a car which will eventually be sold alongside the Barina at GM Holden outlets. The Woody wagon look was added to the Spark in Europe as a summer teaser and a way to lure Gen-Y buyers to the car, which carries a Chevrolet badge on the other side of the world.

It will have a similar starter spot when it reaches Australia, as Holden goes for a double-edged effort with the Barina and Barina Spark sometime in 2011. There is no news yet on the likely pricetag or arrival of the new models, but the new Barina - called the Chevrolet Aveo - is already testing and Holden is believed to be waiting for the newcomer before going two-up in the baby car class.

Meanwhile, there is no chance of a lifetime warranty on new Holdens even though the Red Lion brand's sister company has just done the deal in Britain. Vauxhall is now providing lifetime warranty on all new cars from the day of registration, with a package that covers all major components.

There is a hitch - because the lifetime coverage is tied to the first owner - but Vauxhall says it will still have a 160,000-kilometre protection package regardless of the owner. And owners must still visit a Vauxhall dealer each year for a free vehicle inspection.

Vauxhall is also working on a lifetime program purchase for second owners, but the British move has not triggered any thinking in Australia. "Holden doesn't have any plans to introduce this sort of warranty," Holden spokesperson, Emily Perry, says.

Anyone that knows me knows I don't particularly fancy golf, BUT I do love an opportunity to support local business and our Holden Team. On Monday we will be supporting 2 teams from Beecham Holden, and we are hoping for a lovely day and plenty of fun and activities.
